Club Information

General Info
The Berkeley Math Club is an organization which allows students to pursue mathematics and related subjects competitively. Each year, teams of students in every level of math offered at
Berkeley travel around the state to participate in various regional competitions and state invitationals.

The primary fundraiser of the Math Club is the lunch program, which serves food each day to students in both the Upper and Middle Divisions. These funds are primarily used to finance the club's trip each summer to the National Mu Alpha Theta Convention.

Dr. Morris sponsors the Math Club and attends the competitions with the students.

Club History
The Berkeley Math Club was started in 1978 by Thom Morris and Everett Redmond. In its 21-year history, the club has hosted several competitions:

  • 1982 (Invitational)
  • 1984 (States)
  • 1986 (Nationals - Tampa)
  • 1992 (Nationals - Princeton)
  • 1999 (Invitational)
  • 2000 (Nationals - San Diego)
  • 2003 (Nationals - Atlanta)

Other faculty members to assist Dr. Morris in sponsoring the Math Club include: Mrs. Barbara Pieper, Mrs. Dorothy Schroeder, and Ms. Sallie Scudder. The club has over 70 members for the 2004-2005 school year, thus making it the largest club on campus!

After-School/Morning Practices
The practice schedule for the 2004-2005 school year can be found on the "2005 Schedule Page."

Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society
Not to be confused with the Math Club, the Berkeley Chapter of the Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society honors those students who have excelled in mathematics, have strong overall academic records, and have actively participated in Math Club events during their years at
Berkeley. The students who meet these qualifications and have accumulated enough mathematics credits are formally inducted each spring in an elaborate ceremony. New members pledge to continue their commitments to mathematics and to aid their fellow students; a minimum of five tutoring hours are required of every member each year.
