Through a carefully designed curriculum and individual tutorials, the Department of English seeks to instill in its students a love of literature, a respect for language, and the skills of meaningful analysis.  Students write imaginative and critical pieces regularly, receiving almost immediate feedback that is both meaningful and detailed.

In addition to its core curriculum, the department challenges and supports its students through English Expression courses in the Middle Division; the Center for Writing, serving both divisions; English Lab, speech classes, honors courses, and challenging electives in the Upper Division.
