The goal of Berkeley’s Foreign Languages Department is to help students develop the skills necessary (aural comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing) to communicate in a second language as well as to provide students with an understanding and appreciation of other cultures.

Our students begin the study of Spanish in the Lower Division and continue studying Spanish, Latin, French or Chinese in the Middle and Upper divisions. Through the many foreign language courses offered at Berkeley, which range from level one to AP for Spanish, French and Latin, students are better prepared both for higher education and for their future roles as informed and responsible citizens.
