WORD PROCESSING VOCABULARY - Part 1

 

·        Character - any letter, number or symbol which can be displayed on the screen.

·        Text - Any character or group of characters in a document.

·        Document - Anything that is typed in a word processor, such as a report, letter or story.

·        File - Information that is created and stored on a disk.

·        File name - A name for a file stored on disk, up to 8 letters in length (Word 95 allows longer names).  Word automatically adds the three letter extension .doc. You can not use certain symbols or punctuation; the name should make sense.

·        Extension - Three letters following the . of a file name. (report.doc)

·        Menu - A list of choices that are available.  (bars, pull-downs)

·        Default - A choice that is selected automatically by the computer if not changed by the user, such as left align, black font, print 1 copy.

·        Dialog box  - A screen used to enter further information needed by the computer or give more choices to the user.

·        New - Asks the computer to start a fresh file.

·        Open - Asks the computer to locate a file saved on disk and place it in memory and on the screen.

·        Close - remove the file from screen and memory.

·        Save - Saves a file to disk; overwrites the original.

·        Save As - Allows you to save an existing file with another name or in another place; does not overwrite the original.

·        Preview - Allows you to see how the print out will look before printing.

·        Print - Sends the file to the printer.

·        Margins - Blank space which surrounds the text on a print out.

·        Word wrap - When the computer decides whether to keep a word on the current line or move it to the next line because the margin is in the way.

·        Show/Hide - Allows usually invisible characters to appear on screen to see where tab, spacebar and enter keys have been used.  These do not appear on the print out.

 


WORD PROCESSING VOCABULARY - Part 2

 

·        Copy - creates a copy of the selected text or object and places on the clipboard

·        Cut - removes selected text or object from its location and places it on the clipboard

·        Clipboard - temporary storage area for cut/copy (retrieved with paste)

·        Paste - enters data from the clipboard into the document at the cursor

·        Undo - allows you to cancel the last command chosen

·        Redo - allows you to redo your undo

·        Format - the way text appears or is arranged

·        Bold - text is darker

·        Italic - text has a slant

·        Underline - text is underlined

·        Alignment - how text is arranged in relationship to margins

-       Right - the text ends at the right margin

-       Left - the text starts at the left margin (default)

-       Center - the line is centered between margins

-       Justified - the line extends from left to right margins; extra spaces are inserted

·        Line spacing single - text appears on every line

·        Line spacing double - text appears on every other line (leaving one blank between)

·        Change case - changes the capitalization of selected text

·        Page break -  Breaks a page and starts the next (rather than pressing enter to get there)

·        Page numbering tool -  allows the computer to number the pages.

·        Header - text printed inside the top margin

·        Footer - text printed inside the bottom margin

·        Subscript - text is printed slightly lower than the normal line (H20)

·        Superscript - text is printed slightly higher than the normal line (80o)

·        Find - lets you to locate specific text in a document (string of characters); Find whole word option is available to limit

·        Replace - lets you to locate specific text in a document and replace it with other text

·        Spell checker - compares text to a list of words (dictionary); locates words not in its list and highlights them as possible spelling errors and suggests possible alternatives.  Allows user to ignore suggestion, change to suggestion, request more suggestions, or add the word to its list.

·        Thesaurus - gives possible synonyms; cursor needs to be in the word

·        Borders and shading - adds borders and shading to selected paragraphs or document
