Cathedrals

As you have learned already, the building of cathedrals was an important part of the art and architecture of the middle ages. It also played a major role in the spiritual and cultural lives of the people of that time. Please look at the links below to explore some of these magnificent buildings:

You will complete two projects on cathedrals. One will have you creating your own stained-glass window in class. For the other you will design and print a brochure that will advertise your favorite medieval cathedral based on the research you have done.

In your brochure, you must include the following information:

o       Cathedral’s name

o       Where it is located – Town or city and country, plus a map

o       When was it built (usually a span of dates, when it was started and when it was finished)

o       Architectural style (Is it a gothic cathedral? Something else?)

o       A picture and description of at least one stained glass window in the church

o       A picture of the outside of the cathedral

o       What it is being used for now (Do people still worship there? Is it a museum? Do people make pilgrimages to visit it?)

o       The top five reasons to visit this particular cathedral (What makes this church special? Can people take tours? Does it have a gift shop?)

o       Make sure you list the sites you used!!!!

o       We will discuss appropriate layouts in class. Here is the cathedral brochure.

o       You may wish to use the “Cathedral Notes” form to organize your notes. You may download it from the link above.
