Leadership Responsibilities

Being in fifth grade at Berkeley is special!  As “Seniors of the Lower Division” fifth graders are given a variety of responsibilities, which help them develop leadership skills and potential.  By the time the school year draws to a close, students in fifth grade have served the school in a number of ways, and they have served as wonderful role models for the younger students!

  • Fifth graders serve as PATROLS throughout the school year. They  help faculty and parents with drop-off and dismissal.  They are out front every morning and afternoon with smiles on their faces to assist students and to help keep traffic moving smoothly.

  • During fifth-grade homeroom time, students serve as proctors, and they help the lower division office staff by running errands. Students also take turns putting up the flag on the Mound.

  • The First Grade Buddy Program is a favorite with students.  Fifth graders and first graders are paired up, and throughout the year joint activities are planned to take advantage of the academic and social opportunities which exist when older students help younger ones.  Special and unique bonds are formed between partners.

  • Every fifth grader serves on the lower division Community Council. This group meets and helps develop ways to make our school community an even better place.

CLUBS

Weekly club time is given to fifth graders every Friday. Early in the year students fill out applications to join the clubs of their choice. Each club is sponsored by a lower division faculty member.

  • TECH KIDS are fifth grade students who assist the technology coordinator and other faculty members.  These students help produce Power Points each week. They take pictures of special events and students who are celebrating birthdays. These are shown on the electronic bulletin board in the library. They also provide computer assistance in classrooms from time to time.

  • Serving as Junior Guides is another way that some fifth graders serve the school in a leadership capacity. Students who are interested in this area of leadership fill out an application early in the year.  They assist Admissions by acting as guides for prospective applicants and their parents who come to tour the school.  They also help during Admissions Open Houses.

  • Fifth-grade students are asked to write articles for the Funfare newspaper.  They also take pictures to be used in the newspaper. Students help in selecting the types of articles to be included in each issue. Students also help with the distribution of the newspapers.

  • Fifth-grade students are given the opportunity to help on the Yearbook staff. They take pictures and help with the captions for them. They work on the layout of the lower division pages, and at the end of the year they help with the distribution of the yearbooks.
