1764
The Sugar Act
The Sugar Act of 1764 was a tax on all products that were not made or grown by the colonists. They were imported. Colonists imported sugar, molasses, paper, glass, lead, paint, and tea. Before this time, there was no tax on goods bought from other England but now, England imposed this tax on all these products.

They were upset not only that they were being taxed, but because they were not asked about the taxes. Your textbook talks about this.

The Patriots resented this tax and the Loyalists thought it was needed. Check these two accounts of the tax.
