Campaign to Construct Center for the Arts and Sciences Gains Momentum with the Help of Visionary Donors

Once complete, this facility will serve as an iconic home for middle and upper division Arts and Sciences curriculum and programming. It will feature 75,000 square feet of 21st century classrooms with leading-edge technology, college-level lab spaces for science and digital media endeavors, performance studios, an art gallery, group and individual study areas, an intimate recital hall, and generous meeting spaces designed to inspire collaborative thought, outstanding teaching, and deep learning.

Collaborative learning areas dedicated to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) will inspire interdisciplinary study throughout the building. As awe-inspiring as the Center will be, the key stakeholders who believed in the need for such a facility at Berkeley deserve our most sincere gratitude for speaking up, sharing their vision, and ultimately supporting our efforts.

Berkeley has been fortunate to have already received several extraordinarily significant leadership gifts from families and individuals. These gifts enable us to move forward with the campaign to support the Center. Robert Gries, Jr. has pledged the lead gift for the building, and we are honored to officially recognize his philanthropy by naming the facility the Gries Center for the Arts and Sciences.

From the beginning, Marty and Mary Ann Schaffel, inspired by our science faculty and their amazing work, placed great faith in the school and pioneered support of the Master Plan by fully funding the cost of the architectural design to bring the vision for the Gries Center to life. Soon, others with that same passion and commitment to provide the best possible environment for our students stepped forward to support what they know in their hearts will be a ‘game changer’ for our school. Just recently, Dan Doyle Jr., his wife Nicole, and the Doyle family made an incredibly generous gift to the campaign, giving us this opportunity to come to you, our Berkeley family, to complete this work. Our community’s supporters give because they know they can make a difference, inspire others, and change lives.

“For these donors and to those who supported the successful completion of earlier phases of the Master Plan, we are grateful,” said Headmaster Seivold. “There’s more to be done, and we need the entire Berkeley community to step forward to help us complete this amazing opportunity for our school. With your support, the development of world-class learning opportunities will positively impact every student at Berkeley for generations to come. Our faculty will be able to teach in an environment unconstrained by space and technological limitations, and we will be able to attract and retain the best educators from around the country to teach our children.”

We look forward to sharing more exciting news. We will host campaign events to engage you and to inform you about how to help with this transformative opportunity. Gifts can be made in cash, or pledged over time. An investment in this effort will yield incalculable returns; thank you for considering how you might help us achieve our vision.
