Berkeley Welcomes Lower Division Director

This summer, Berkeley Preparatory School welcomes Melissa Davis, who begins her role as our Lower Division Director. Davis, a former Lower School Director at Alexandria Country Day School (ACDS) in Alexandria, Virginia, is excited to get started.

Davis graduated with honors from the University of Chicago with a degree in English Language and Literature in 2001, and began her career as a teaching intern at the Potomac School in McLean, Virginia. She moved quickly into a full-time role as second grade teacher at the Key School in Annapolis, Maryland, and then she went back to Potomac, where she served for 10 more years. In addition to having her own classroom at Potomac for five years, in 2008, she earned a Master’s in Reading Education from the University of Virginia.

At Potomac, in addition to teaching, she served as a Curriculum Coordinator, K-12 Resource Team Coordinator, Intern Coordinator, and from 2008-2013, as a Reading Specialist and Literacy Coach. She has participated in copious ongoing professional development, including the prestigious Teachers College Reading and Writing Project and the National Association of Independent Schools’ Fellowship for Aspiring Heads. In 2013, Melissa was chosen from a national pool to lead the Lower Division of ACDS, and in her time there, she has made an enormous positive impact.

She has been described by former colleagues as “an incredibly hard worker” and “someone who builds strong relationships with faculty and families.” One of the 4th grade teachers at ACDS added, “Melissa’s leadership style is remarkable. She is an optimistic leader who demonstrates empathy towards families in difficult situations while remaining honest about learning needs and the needs of the school.” Her former Head of School, who had "nothing but the highest praise” for her, offered that she is “absolutely extraordinary.”

Berkeley Headmaster Joseph Seivold said of Davis, “She is an adept administrator, strong leader and woman of great character. Melissa is poised and ready to join our outstanding team of Lower Division professionals at Berkeley to craft together the best possible environment for the education of each of the children in our charge.”
