Berkeley Athletics Recognized as Fred E. Rozelle Sportsmanship Award Winner for Class 3A

Following a history-making year in Berkeley athletics, the Buccaneers have earned another accolade from the Florida High School Athletic Association, recognizing schools that promote sportsmanship on and off the field. The Fred E. Rozelle Sportsmanship Award is given to schools whose athletic teams demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship during the 2021-2022 regular season and FHSAA State Series competition. This year, ten high schools and one middle school received the prestigious award. Berkeley has been recognized as the winner for Class 3A.

“It is our pleasure to once again promote the outstanding sportsmanship displayed by our member schools,” said George Tomyn, FHSAA Executive Director. “High school sports teach lessons well beyond the game, and no one knows that better than the schools being recognized as the 2022 Fred E. Rozelle Sportsmanship Award Winners. The student-athletes, coaches, administrators, parents, and fans of these well-deserving programs exemplify the true meaning of sportsmanship.”

The Fred E. Rozelle Sportsmanship Award is presented to one school in each classification whose total sports program best exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship as demonstrated by its coaches, players, and spectators. Criteria for selecting winners include programs and activities implemented within the school and community to promote sportsmanship, the number and type of exceptional sportsmanship reports, and the source of the nomination.

“Your dedication and commitment to sportsmanship shine through the student body,” said Berkeley Athletic Director Bobby Reinhart to his coaching staff. “This is a direct reflection of our coaching administration and leadership. The FHSAA takes great pride in promoting good sportsmanship through athletics. Our Buccaneer student-athletes, fans, and administrators are outstanding examples of what it means to be a good sport.”

Reinhart added how proud he is of the Berkeley coaches and student-athletes. “We are coming off our most successful year across the board in the athletic arena. Plus, winning the Academic State Championship and now the Rozelle Sportsmanship Award…that’s a real trifecta!

The award, presented annually since 1991, is named in honor of FHSAA Commissioner Emeritus Fred E. Rozelle. Each classification winner will receive $2,500 and a commemorative plaque in August.
