Health Science Laureates Thrive in Experiential Learning Environments

As part of their capstone clinical experience, seven laureates—all seniors—in Berkeley’s Health Sciences Institute (BHSI) were recently treated to a behind-the-scenes tour and Q&A with Tom Mulligan, Director of Sports Medicine and Head Athletic Trainer for the Tampa Bay Lightning. They learned about how Tom and his team help professional hockey players prevent and treat injuries.

This field trip was one of several experiential learning opportunities that laureates in this program have had. Other opportunities have included shadowing doctors in a clinical setting.

BHSI immerses seniors in a comprehensive clinical and laboratory science curriculum that increases general science knowledge, improves critical-thinking skills with iterative learning projects, and better prepares them for advanced coursework in medical and clinical science post-baccalaureate programs. Beyond interacting with medical professionals, laureates also get to analyze and discuss current medical research topics, learn cutting-edge research techniques, and explore next-generation medical topics such as bioinformatics and gene editing in a hands-on format.

BHSI is one of three institutes currently offered as part of the Center for Advanced Experiential Learning at Berkeley that also includes the Lasher Business Institute and the Berkeley Law Institute.
