In nineteenth century France, Jean Valjean is released from 19 years
of imprisonment, but finds nothing in store for him but mistrust and mistreatment. He breaks his parole in hopes of starting a new life, initiating a lifelong struggle for redemption as he is relentlessly pursued by Inspector Javert, who refuses to believe Valjean can change his ways. After his release, Valjean meets Fantine, a factory worker who sent her child, Cosette, to live with the innkeepers, M. and Mme. Thénardier in another town. The Thénardiers have another daughter, Eponine, whom they treat much better than Cosette. The women of the factory insist that Fantine be fired because of her loose morals. After Fantine dies of tuberculosis, Valjean adopts Cosette from the Thénardiers.
