Berkeley’s Lower Division strives to provide its students with more than an extraordinary foundation for future learning. Students are encouraged to explore and develop individual interests and talents. Our faculty gives students the freedom to discover their own unique talents as well as the wonders of the world around them. Whether it’s painting flowers at a pre-kindergarten learning center or completing a fifth grade project on a laptop, Berkeley students engage in developmentally appropriate educational experiences. They learn through discovery that the real joy of education comes from accomplishing a worthwhile and challenging task in a safe and nurturing atmosphere.

The Lower Division works to educate the whole child with special area classes in Spanish, science, physical education, computer, library, drama, music and art. Our media center is open to lower division students at all times during the school day so that students always have access to the resources and reading opportunities that are found there. In this rapidly changing technological world, computer lab instructors work with classroom teachers to complement and enhance what is taking place in the classroom. Values, virtues and citizenship skills are taught and reinforced through our character education program.

Various community service projects and service opportunities within the school allow our students to put these values into action. Berkeley’s Lower Division instills in its students a lifelong love of learning that will serve them well today, tomorrow and into the future.

Students in grades Pre-K through 5 build fundamental skills through a love of learning. Curricular emphasis is on the core subjects of reading and mathematics. An interdisciplinary approach is used in world language and social studies, and manipulatives are used extensively in both the science and the mathematics programs. Music, art, drama, and physical education are integral parts of the Lower Division curriculum. Each student also receives instruction in library and computer skills.
