A Growing Berkeley Academy Celebrates a Successful Summer

The Berkeley Academy is a free, service program offered by Berkeley, aimed at helping highly motivated, low-income students in our Tampa Bay community reach their unique potential and achieve their dream of going to college. The Berkeley Academy is committed to ensuring that all of its students have the preparation, skills, and knowledge necessary to succeed in college and beyond.

Now in its third year, the Berkeley Academy had its largest summer yet, hosting rising seventh, eighth, and ninth graders. “We had an incredible time growing our family, and we were thrilled to offer our scholars a range of activities and exposure, from robotics to swimming lessons,” said Emilie Sukijbumrung, Assistant Director for Scholar Support. “We introduced many new opportunities this year, including an additional DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) and athletics time. We were also happy to host business leaders who spoke to our scholars about their careers and the steps they took to reach their goals.”

At the end of the summer, the Berkeley Academy staff were both sad and incredibly proud to graduate the founding class of scholars (soon-to-be ninth graders) from the middle school program and into the high school College-Bound program! Throughout the next four years, the team will provide them with test preparation workshops, community outings, service days, and college application support.

Additionally, throughout the year, the staff will visit all scholars in their home schools to ensure that they remain supported and on track to college. “We are eager to continue our Saturday School programming once a month, where we offer enrichments taught by our very own Berkeley Upper Division students. We have partnered with the University of Tampa to continue our teachers-teaching-teachers model, as education majors join our team to coach our young student-teachers to be the best educators they can be,” said Sukijbumrung.
