Babe Zaharias Meet Results

On Friday, the Cross Country Bucs traveled toward the Carrollwood area to participate in the Babe Zaharias Twilight Challenge at the Babe Zaharias Golf Course. Running against 30 schools from the Tampa Bay area, the XC Bucs were not going to settle for par. Nay, they were aggressive throughout the course, and then when they had to turn in their scorecard, they could keep their heads up high (unless someone yelled fore).
The Varsity Boys placed 5th overall, only succumbing to some top area teams such as Sarasota (defending 4A State Champs), class 1A State favorite Seffner Christian, and perennial powerhouse Newsome. The Bucs did take down a few other top schools in the area such as Mitchell, Land O’ Lakes, Cambridge, and rivals TC and Calvary. Individually, the Bucs placed 3 in the top 20 (out of more than 170 competitors). Hudson Rowan led the way with a quick start, as he found himself in a lead pack of 10 early in the race. By the end, Hudson was using his 800 meter speed to finish 7th overall in a new PR. Superfrosh Kirin Karver also opened the first part of the race quickly and then held on to place 15th overall in a big PR, placing 1st among all freshman in the race. Captain Trey Morris rebounded from his first race to run a top-notch time to place 20th overall. Rounding out our scoring 5 on the day, Wolfgang Weber and Luke Doyle raced together, with Luke earning a PR time. Alex Shear, Colby Kudla, and Liam Jordan rounded out our varsity team, with Alex and Liam setting Personal Best times (Liam was the top MD athlete in the Varsity race).
The Varsity Girls placed 9th, defeating notable programs such as Sarasota Riverview, Land O’Lakes, and rivals TC and Calvary. Running the traditional “Berkeley Pack,” Anna McDermott once again led the way in a season best time as she placed 41st out of nearly 170 competitors. Just 7 places behind, Kylie Stephens also set a seasonal best time to hold off a hard charging pack behind her. Shortly after Kylie, Berkeley would place 7 runners in a 15-athlete span. Finley Jordan set a season best time as she led our next pack. Just a few places behind, Claire Armstrong finished our number 4 on the day, with Heidi Hausinger having her best race of the season to round out our scoring 5. Macy Maiocco finished just behind Heidi, while Emma Flowers and Abbey Ramos finished within a few spots of Macy.
Berkeley’s future continues to look bright, as our JV teams showed off some impressive opening marks in their respective races. On the Boy’s side, George Smith led the way with a great opening season mark. Corey Bader also opened the season well in our number 2 position, making a comeback from an injury that sidelined him most of last year. Next, the Berkeley boys pack of Robert Muldrow, Anthony Broome, and Geno Fraifer all finished near each other in either season best or personal best times. John Reilley and Zev Huneycutt rounded out our top 7. On the Girl’s side, newby to XC, Grace Barrett finished in the top 30 to open her cross country career in strong fashion. Just a few places later, Thalia Fraifer made her long awaited comeback from an injury to place as our number 2 and finish in the top 40. Two more athletes made their Berkeley XC career debuts, Brianna Orbegoso and Angelina Cardona ran very well in their first ever XC 5K.
The JV and MD teams will be in action on Thursday at the Indian Rocks Invitational at Taylor Park in Largo, while the Varsity teams will be traveling to Ocala to compete in the Florida Horse Park Invitational on Saturday. Go Bucs!
