Berkeley Responds: Water and Food Collected to Benefit the Bahamas

On Friday, September 13, the Berkeley community came together to make a positive difference for those in the Bahamas affected by Hurricane Dorian. Our school has a special relationship with the Bahamas through our annual Bahama Books book drive and service initiatives in Nassau. While that area was mostly spared, our attention turned to those areas so devastated by the storm. The Bahamian government estimates that more than 70,000 people are homeless on Grand Bahama and the Abaco Islands, the parts of the Bahamas hardest hit by the hurricane.

With help from the Tsavoussis family, who generously offered to ship all the items we collect to the Bahamas, our community donated pallets full of water and food. Berkeley families and alumni delivered carloads of water, canned food, and dry food goods that will benefit hundreds of people in need. In fact, a second truck had to be delivered because the volume of donations exceeded expectations. Ultimately, the water and food will be shipped to the Bahamas where we will work with local officials to distribute those items to the areas where the need is greatest.

We want to thank everyone who donated to this cause; and a special thanks to all of the faculty, staff, students, and parents who arrived early and stayed late to volunteer their time and efforts to make this day so special.
