Berkeley Students Recognized as National Merit Semifinalists and Commended Students

Berkeley Preparatory School is honored to recognize 15 students who have been named as National Merit Semifinalists among 16,000 students from across the country as part of the 66th National Merit Scholarship Program.

In order to qualify as a Semifinalist, juniors in 21,000 high schools entered the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). Semifinalists are the highest scorers in each of the 50 states and represent less than one percent of each state’s high school seniors.

These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. Approximately 90 percent of the Semifinalists are accepted to attain Finalist standing, and about half will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.

In addition to Berkeley’s 15 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists, 12 students were named Commended Students by the National Merit Scholarship Program. A total of 34,000 students across the country earned this distinction and placed among the top five percent of the more than 1.5 million students who took the Preliminary SAT.
