Senior Service Project Addresses Food Insecurity Near and Far

As the Senior Class of 2021 completes preparations to walk across the stage at Commencement, their final moments as students on campus were dedicated to a day of service and making a positive difference in the lives of others. This year’s senior class service day highlighted a hunger project benefitting food-insecure families in the Bahamas. The class chose to work with U.S. Hunger (formerly Feeding Children Everywhere) because their project could be modified to be a productive, socially distant event for everyone. With support from the Parents’ Club, which donated the funds to purchase the food, the seniors packed approximately 27,500 meals for those in need!

The recently acquired Berkeley Food Pantry, located near Berkeley’s campus, is currently serving our food-insecure neighbors in Town ‘n’ Country with help from Feeding Tampa Bay. Therefore, the school will send the pre-packaged meals to Nassau, where they will be distributed by a generous Berkeley alumni family throughout the Bahamas. As part of their hunger project, the class also participated in an initiative named “Cereal for Summer,” where each senior donated a box of cereal, oatmeal, grits, granola bars, and other dry breakfast foods to the Berkeley Food Pantry.

Another highlight of the service day included a blanket-making session coordinated by the senior-led Final Footprint Committee of Elle Lawson, Rachel Mintz, Sarah Hanna, Charlotte Graham, and Lane Poe. These hand-tied blankets will be donated to the Linus Project, a national non-profit organization dedicated to providing new blankets to children in need.

Congratulations Class of 2021, and thank you for making a positive difference in the lives of others.
