Carol Kennedy Pro Communitate Award

Each year, an individual or group in the Berkeley Preparatory School community is presented The Carol Kennedy Pro Communitate Award in honor of the late Carol Kennedy, a Princeton-bound Berkeley senior (’84) who tragically lost her life in an automobile accident.

The award is given to those who best exemplify the spirit of our school — just as Carol Kennedy had — and who have done the most to strengthen the ties that bind us together as the Berkeley community.

To respond to the uncertainty of COVID-19 on our ability to reopen for the 2020-21 school year, members of the Berkeley Administration and members of the medical community formed a COVID-19 Taskforce. The Taskforce began meeting throughout the summer of 2020 to develop our strategic reopening plan known as Safe and Together. The plan outlined science- and data-based safety standards and guidelines from national and global health experts and our own medical Taskforce members – all of whom are regarded as experts in their field.

“Our Headmaster and this committee were determined to find a way to bring us together – and keep us together. They faced one difficult decision after another and never faltered,” said Laura Grams, Director of Institutional Advancement at Berkeley. “They kept the school and the community at the center of each decision and gathered together groups of thoughtful, innovative people to help stay the course.”

With the 2021-22 school year well underway, the work of the COVID-19 Taskforce continues to shape and define the course of action we take in mitigating the virus within our school community. The Taskforce meets regularly to address fluctuations in positivity rates, discuss new variants and the potential impact on our community, and to encourage vaccinations for all who are eligible to participate.
