Buccaneers Win Sunshine Cup All-Sports Award for the First Time

The post-season accolades for Berkeley Preparatory School Athletics continue to grow as the Buccaneers recently won the Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Award for Class 3A, presented by the Florida High School Athletic Association. This marks the first time in school history that Berkeley has received this award. The award uses a numerical ranking to distinguish state athletic program success for the year based on its finish in the FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in the classification in which it has been assigned to compete. The state-wide results for the 2021-22 school year recognize Doral Academy (7A), St. Thomas Aquinas (6A), Jesuit (5A), Bolles (4A), Berkeley Prep (3A), Oak Hall (2A), and Baker (1A) as being overall classifications winners.

A release from the FHSAA states: “Points are awarded to a school based on its finish in FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in the classification in which it has been assigned to compete. The top 16 places are scored. In all sports with team scores, points are awarded as follows: 20 for the state champion, 12 for the state runner-up, 9 for the state semifinalists, 6 for 5-8th places, and 3 for 9-16th places. In sports where 16 or less schools qualify for the state tournament bracket, points will only be awarded to the 1st through 8th place finishers using the same scoring system.”

The award recognizes an outstanding year for Berkeley Athletics. In addition, the student-athletes, Berkeley coaches, and administrators were also recognized with the Fred E. Rozelle Sportsmanship Award and the FHSAA Academic Team Champion for Class 3A trophy. Read more about the Sunshine Cup by clicking HERE.
