RE-CENTER

Isaiah 26:3, “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”

There have been so many blessings as I have started this wonderful opportunity as Associate Chaplain at Berkeley. One of the greatest blessings (other than the amazing students) is my new commute from the New Tampa area. As a mom of two, this commute gives me coveted alone time.

Every morning I get in my vehicle, open Google Maps, and say “navigate to Berkeley Prep.” Google pays attention to increased traffic, and I get to relax. I spend my time in the car being read to, singing to music, and spending time centering myself.

There are times when I zoom out on the map to see where there is a coffee shop or how to add an errand to the route on the way home. As I zoom out, it is easy to lose perspective of where I am or where I am headed. When I stretch out the map past my next driving directions, a box pops up that says “Re-center.” When I hit the button, Google Maps zooms back in on my next step and keeps me headed in the right direction.

There are times in life when I need a “Re-center” button. The chaos of life distracts me from where I am headed. I become focused on too many things at once. I lose my perspective of where I am and where I am headed. These are the moments when I need a “re-center.” My faith can serve as a “re-center.” My music can serve as a “re-center.” A deep breath can serve as a “re-center.” We all have different ways to “re-center.” The key is recognizing the need and deciding to re-center.

When I hit re-center—on my phone or in my life—I get back on track. It might take a moment to do, but it saves me time and stress in the long run. I become more productive and more peaceful.

If you see me driving along the Veterans, singing away, feel free to wave. I hope you join me on this journey to find center again.
