The Little Things

As I read this week's scripture, I found one line that really stood out to me. In the book of Isaiah, chapter 48, God says: “O if you had paid attention to my commandments! Then your prosperity would have been like a river, and your success like the waves of the sea.”

This week Chaplain asked me to write about where I’ve seen God in the world lately, and when I thought about it, I realized that we most often look at the big things. We think about that game we won, the test we aced, and we thank God for those successes. Yes, God is present there with us in those moments, but more importantly his presence never really leaves, and can always be felt.

As it said in Isaiah, we just need to pay attention. God is present in the little things, things that may go unnoticed. A stranger that holds the door for you, getting a text from an old friend, or that hug from your family member when you get home. God reminds us of his presence in those moments, too. It can be hard to see God’s presence when things don’t go our way; when we miss that shot, or do not-so-good on that test. It’s easy to feel as if God’s not present when dealing with failure. Most often we are filled with regret or anger, and chose not to notice the good.

Next time, I encourage you to not only notice the little things, but appreciate them. The more you do, I believe the more surrounded you’ll feel with God’s love.
