Ordinary Deeds

In the gospel, Jesus says that “when you do acts of charity, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing; your good deeds must be done in secret.”

When I was thinking about what to write, I found it hard to think of deeds that I have done that are not just ordinary. But then I realized that maybe Jesus doesn’t mean that we have to do grand deeds -  like saving someone or being miraculous - maybe Jesus just wants us to do little deeds like holding a door for someone or giving them a compliment.

In the season of lent we prepare our hearts to be cleansed. And in doing the small deeds, like focusing on helping other people, without looking for praise in return, we live more like Jesus.

Although Jesus did the grand deed of sacrificing for us on the cross, he also did little deeds during his earthly ministry. For example, he inspired people to be the best version of themselves, showed empathy towards people, prayed for people, broke bread with people, and was a friend to all.

Jesus wants us to be more like him, but this may just look like the little things. So try and do a small deed for someone today, like holding the door or giving them a compliment. You just may show them the face of Jesus.
