Nationally Recognized Media Expert Jean Kilbourne Visits Berkeley

Award-winning author and documentary filmmaker Dr. Jean Kilbourne today discussed topics from her book “So Sexy So Soon: The New Sexualized Childhood and What Parents Can Do to Protect Their Kids” with Berkeley parents. Dr. Kilbourne cautioned that children today are being exposed to increasing amounts of provocative advertising, suggestive songs, and violent video games. Described by The Boston Globe as "a superstar lecturer," Dr. Kilbourne has been named by The New York Times Magazine as one of the three most popular speakers on college campuses today. Internationally recognized for her groundbreaking work on the image of women in advertising and her critical studies of alcohol and tobacco advertising, Dr. Kilbourne’s films, lectures, and television appearances have been seen by millions of people throughout the world. Dr. Kilbourne urged parents to be aware of what their children are exposed to, and she encouraged family discussions with a focus on educating children to view ads critically before deciding whether or not to embrace their messages. Her thought-provoking presentation was followed by an informal Q&A session, which offered parents additional tips and strategies.
