Hope Children’s Home Students Visit Berkeley

First and second graders from Hope Children’s Home, a boarding school for children who have been abused, neglected or orphaned, spent today visiting with eighth grade Berkeley student volunteers. Today’s visit included a tour of Berkeley’s campus and a 45-minute tutoring session. Once the rigors of practicing their multiplication tables were over, they worked up an appetite playing and wrapped up the day enjoying lunch together. The home’s Administrator Dave Riffe said, “Our students could not wait to visit Berkeley! The campus is amazing, and everyone is so friendly.” The students were all sad to see the day come to an end but are certainly looking forward to the next time!

In anticipation of their visit, Berkeley students collected and donated more than 400 books to the Hope Children’s Home Library this morning. Throughout the year, Berkeley students volunteer to help the home’s youngest students by tutoring them in math, English, reading and writing. Berkeley students sponsored baked sales last fall to raise funds that provided various items for the home, such as 60 packs of colored markers and paper. Students have been performing community service and donating various supplies to the Hope Children’s Home six times per year since 2003.
