Berkeley Debate Team Wins State Championship!

Congratulations to the debate team of Andrew Goldfield ’13 and Yunhan Xu ’13, who won the Florida Forensic League State Championships over the weekend! The win marks the first state championship for Berkeley in debate, and it is the first time that a sophomore team has claimed the state title. Under the tutelage of Debate Coach Mike Speer and Assistant Debate Coach Kevin McCaffrey, the pair started specific preparations for the state tournament in December. The team of Jake Salzer ’12 and Francis Migliore ’13 finished in fourth place.

The win at the states culminates a successful year for Berkeley’s debate team. Berkeley teams have won every Florida tournament in which they have competed except the University of Florida Blue Key where they finished in third place. Berkeley teams have debated in Washington D.C., Georgia, Michigan and Massachusetts. In February, the debate team earned first place at the regional competition, a feat which Berkeley has been able to accomplish for the past six years.

Congratulations to Andrew and Yunhan, and to the entire debate team for their success this year!
