Berkeley Wins State Chess Championship
Berkeley Preparatory School would like to congratulate the Lower Division Chess Team for winning the Florida Scholastic Chess All-Star K-3 State Championship in Palm Beach Gardens. The closely contested three-day tournament came down to the final match for the six members of the chess team of Banan T. ‘22, Alex T. ‘22, Asher E. ‘21, Tej B. ‘22, Colin L. ‘21, and Aaron J. ‘22.
Coach Willard Taylor said the team was ranked third in entering the state tournament following a win at regionals. “Now we look forward to competing at nationals in the fall,” he said. The four-day national chess tournament will be held in Orlando in November. This is the first chess state title since Berkeley last won eight years ago.
