Debate Team Experiences Early Success in 2012-13

The members of our debate team have had a busy fall and have started the school year off with some impressive results. In October, the debate team of Yunhan Xu ’13 and Robert Danco ’14 reached the quarterfinals at the Heart of Texas tournament at the St. Mark's School of Texas. Due to the strict selection policy of the competitors, Heart of Texas is considered one of the most difficult tournaments of the fall. Their outstanding performance earned Yunhan and Robert a bid to the Tournament of Champions held in May at the University of Kentucky.

In November, Danco and Ryan Divers ’14 reached the “Sweet 16” at the University of Michigan debates. This tournament included more than 180 teams from across the country. Due to their success at this tournament, Robert and Ryan earned a bid to the University of Kentucky's Tournament of Champions.

It hasn’t been all work for the debate team as they had the exciting opportunity to be featured live on FOX 13’s “Good Day Tampa Bay” morning program in October. Our team members and head coach Mike Speer were asked to share their opinions on debate tactics prior to the first presidential debate of the 2012 election.

Congratulations to the members of the debate team on their accomplishments thus far, and we are confident this is just the beginning of what will be a successful full year!
