The Betty-Bruce Hoover Center for Writing at Berkeley has been serving the students and the larger community for more than 20 years. In addition to offering peer to peer tutorial services every school block of the day, The Hoover Writing Center offers leadership opportunities for its tutors in various outreach programs including the Online Writing Lab (OWL), Eat and Speak, and The Academy Prep Tutorial Program. Created in 1994, the Hoover Writing Center features one-on-one peer tutoring for students seeking to become more competent and confident writers. Peer tutors work hand-in-hand with the advanced electronic instruction and assistance available via OWL.

Highlights

  • Organizing and running student activities such as The Eat and Speak, Literary Character Day, and Author's Tea with lower division students
  • Students and faculty presenting annually at national conferences, including  the 7C’s, IWCA, NCPTW, NCTE, and SWCA
  • Running an OWL program for students unable to visit the writing center during the day
  • Publishing a blog about writing center activities
  • Encouraging students to publish their research in journals such as Southern Discourse
All of these endeavors are guided by faculty but run by the students.  We offer leadership opportunities to over 30 of our tutors. Each year, our student tutors log over 700 tutorial sessions.
