Berkeley’s Varsity Football Team Wins First-Ever State Championship
Dec 09, 2023
For the first time in school history, Berkeley Preparatory School’s Varsity Football Team has won the State Championship, defeating Miami-based Norland High School in Tallahassee, FL, at Ken Riley Field at Bragg Memorial Stadium at Florida A&M University.
It is also the first state championship for 70-year-old Dominick Ciao, a beloved figure at Berkeley who is in his 17th year as Head Coach of the Varsity Football Team. This was the second trip to the State Finals for the Buccaneers in the past three seasons.
The win was preceded by several other exciting wins, including a 17-14 upset win on the road over American Heritage High School (the Broward campus in Plantation, FL) in the State Semifinals. Before that, during the Regionals, Berkeley was the top-ranked team in Region 2 of the FHSAA Class 2M Playoffs and fended off three teams: Middleton High School, Tampa Catholic High School, and Calvary Christian High School.
