Preview: Les Misérables School Edition, March 15-17

Ten years pass, and Eponine has fallen in love with Marius, a student in an idealistic revolutionary group led by Enjolras. However, Marius does not return her affection, and instead falls in love with Cosette. After the death of General Lamarque, the only government official sympathetic to the poor, Enjolras rallies the troops to fight the French government, and they build a barricade in the streets of Paris. Javert sneaks on to
the barricade to spy on the students, pretending to join the revolution. As the men defend the barricade, Valjean arrives to make sure Marius survives the night. In thanks for joining the fight, Enjolras allows Valjean to execute Javert, who Valjean instead releases. At the barricade, it quickly becomes evident that the people of France will not join the students in their revolt, and they are all eventually killed by the French army. Valjean saves Marius, and escapes through the sewers, where he meets Thénardier and Javert. Unable to reconcile his civil and moral duties, Javert takes his own life. After Marius recovers, Valjean reveals his true identity, and tells Marius that in order to protect Cosette, she can never know who he really is. Thénardier and Madame Thenardier crash Marius and Cosette’s wedding reception and expose that Valjean was the one who saved Marius from the barricade. Marius and Cosette rush to Valjean’s bedside. As he dies, the spirits of Fantine and Eponine guide him to paradise, where he joins the spirits of Enjolras, Gavroche, and the other rebels at the barricade.
