A Prayer for Chanukah and Christmas

Blessed are you, ruler of the universe. You chose for yourself people to join you in the struggle for justice and peace, the original People of God, the Jews, people of the unbroken covenant. Through Jesus Christ, who was a Jew, you chose for yourself all the nations and peoples of the earth.

As your presence encouraged the Maccabees to light the lamp in the Temple and resist oppression and illegitimate authority, and as the birth of Jesus of Nazareth held out hope for the fulfillment of the whole creation, so may the spirit of justice and love shine brightly in us. Help us to see your vision of a world abounding with the possibility of human dignity and liberation from injustice. Your gifts to us are light and life. Help us to receive them gratefully and use them well. We pray remembering the brave men and women of the Maccabees, and in the name of Jesus of Nazareth. Amen.
